Valorie Ebert
I am an Assistant Professor of English at Broward College where I teach Composition I and II, American Literature, and Interdisciplinary Honors courses. I am also the Honors Coordinator for Broward College’s North Campus, where I work to support our honors students as they complete their AA degree.
I hold a Master of Arts degree in English Literature with a specialization in Science Fiction and Fantasy from Florida Atlantic University, and I am currently in the Comparative Studies PhD program at Florida Atlantic University, where I am specializing in Literature and Gender Studies. While currently “ABD,” my dissertation investigates intersectionality and gender power dynamics in contemporary Fantasy literature and is titled, “Power Plays: (Re) Creating Power Structures in The Legend of Eli Monpress Series.” I am expecting to complete in 2022.
As a non-traditional first-generation college student myself, I understand many of the struggles that students face today, especially when working full time while trying to get an education. When I started my educational journey at a community college at 24, I struggled balancing work and education, especially when I left work at 3 am and have to attend an 8 am class. It wasn’t until I started as an adjunct for BC Central and North in 2011 that I truly understood why I was drawn to education, and why teaching is my vocation. I want to, and can, help our students achieve their dreams, and I work toward that goal daily. At that time, I enrolled in as many training classes as I could find that were offered to adjuncts, and I was privileged enough to gain a spot in the FELI (Faculty Experiential Learning Institute) training where I learned more about how to help our students. During my years as an adjunct, I was nominated for the Adjunct Professor of the Year. I also taught at South Tech High School 2016-2017, which has given me better insight into how our students are being prepared for college and how to bridge the gap that exists between high school and college.
In 2017, I was awarded a full-time position at North Campus, and I set out to do everything I could to fulfill my purpose. I completed the ACUE (Association of College and University Educators) Effective Teaching Practices course and went on to complete other ACUE microcredentials along with many other CTEL classes. When the pandemic hit in 2019, I quickly converted my classes to the online environment, and then worked to help other faculty members and adjuncts convert their classes as well. Shortly thereafter, I was informed that I had won the Professor of the Year for North Campus 2019 which I cherish because it means that I touched my student’s lives in a way that was meaningful and that they appreciated.
There are not many people in the world that can say that they love their job and are genuinely happy to go to work each and every day: I can, and that is something worth celebrating.
